I use mine in the tropics @ latitude 16 S. I’m using my 4th one now. Very reliable and accurate. After 5 years under tropical suns the plastic turns opaque and brittle. They will crack. This one is necessary due to 1 to 4 rain events/year over 100 mm, sometimes reaching over 200 mm. Most local gauges will overflow in those conditions.

I've had my rain gauge for well over ten years and it performed like a champ. Rain, snow, sleet, no problem. I figured it didn't crack when it froze (rarely, I almost always empty it daily) because the water could expand upward in the tube when it froze. It did that for years. Until it didn't and now I need a new one. Can't really blame the product because I was lulled into carelessness. Highly recommend.

I have used this rain gauge as part of the CoCoRaHS network and will be adding one to construction site monitoring starting in the spring. It is accurate, has high capacity, and is durable. If you pull the funnel and inner cylinder in winter, it will withstand ice better than the $5 hardware store gauges. I am in my second Minnesota winter and have not had it crack after a freezing rain, even though the cheaper rain gauges at the construction site have broken three times. I empty it daily, so maybe that is why it has not cracked.

There is a serious opportunity here for the manufacturer to offer a true freeze-resistant model. Using a different plastic could do it (and it might be made more UV resistant, too). It freezes in Minnesota, you know. Also snows. Not only will the inner tube crack; the outer one will also. The funnel is useless in snow or freezing; but if you take the funnel and inner tube off; the outer tube alone will accurately capture snowfall, which can be melted and measured for moisture content. But - eventually, you will get caught- if snow melts in the tube due to warming; then freezes, then melts -etc- the outer tube will crack. If you can absolutely never forget to measure/empty - works great. But - someday, you won't. And the plastic does get brittle with age. It's pricey as is. But would I pay $100 for one that doesn't freeze, and lasts 10 years? Yep.

I'm now buying my fourth metric, rain gauge. I find them very accurate and reliable. I use mine in the tropics, where heavy rainfall events over 150 mm are not unusual. The main advantage is its capacity to measure rainfall in excess of 100 mm, which justifies its higher price in comparison to simpler rain gauges. I agree with previous opinions that each one lasts about 5 years. The sun turns them opaque and brittle.

I have had 3 or 4 of these over the years. One of the electronic remote ones would probably be more practical, but I like the direct hands-on aspect of these. I agree with the comment that you will need a new one every five years or so, the plastic does age in the sun. I disagree with the comment that you can let them freeze. The inner tube breaks upon freezing, and then you have to replace it.

Very good product for environments with heavy rainfall whereas most other competing products seldom measure rain over 120-150 mm. I use a metric system. It lasts me for about 5 years and then the plastic starts turning opaque and later begins cracking. I rate it at maximum 5 year lifespan under the sun in the tropics.

Be careful of the review above from small farm near coast. While this is a great rain gauge, if you let it freeze you will be buying a new inner tube as they will crack. Expensive mistake for a piece of plastic.

You won't find a better Rain Gauge than this one. This one will hold up in all kinds of weather and is very accurate. This Rain Gauge is recognized by Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRahs).

Installed in New England; withstands frequent freezing to solid ice. Thaw out in house slowly, measure precipitation, and return to outdoors. Has survived 30 winters without failure or cracking. Measures in Hundredths, 0.01- 10.0 inches. Great!
